One of the toughest, easiest to grow perennials - Baptisia. False Indigo have many fabulous attributes - native to North America, attract pollinators and not preferred by deer. They also tolerate drought conditions once established and therefore need little maintenance. All feature pea-sized blooms arranged on graceful flower spikes atop lupine-like foliage. Excellent for mass plantings, borders, cut flowers, and as a specimen.
Baptisia australis is the native species and the Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year in 2010. 'Purple Smoke' was a top performer at the Mt. Cuba Center's (located in Delaware) plant trials on Baptisia. 'American Goldfinch' is an unusual golden-yellow type that is especially free flowering.
